Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in film (January 2011)

Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in film
The media ownership plays a big part in the production and exchange of a film, almost guaranteeing the success or failure of the film they are producing. For example the production company for the ‘Minions’ is illumination entertainment, this company is therefore in charge of how the movie is produced. The ‘Minions’ film was distributed by Universal pictures which is one of the big six in the film industry, this ensured that the film had a wide release and was known by many audiences. The film was distributed to main stream cinemas, such as Odeon, vue, cineworld so it was easy for audiences to access, universal also spent $26.1 million on TV advertisement which empathised the film.
The exchange for this film was that the film was released in a total of 66 countries making it accessible to a wide range of audiences; the film is also available to watch on Netflix, putlocker, IMDB, and many other internet sites. This creates an issue as many people use illegal internet sites to watch movies such as putlocker instead of paying to see the film as the cinema (piracy). So the media ownership of the film, in this case Universal misses out on profit.
Another issue would be that people pay to watch the film and video the film whilst in the cinema, and then upload it to various different social media sites allowing people to watch it illegally. Piracy is a large issue that many film companies suffer from.
Exchange is the online sharing of the film and how someone watches a film, so as stated above people can watch the ‘Minions’ film on many different internet sites, on DVD, and in 3D.
As for independent films, for example ‘Film 71’ the price for production was cheaper as the budget was £8.1 million where as the production budget for the ‘Minions’ was $74 million. This shows the comparison between indie (independent) films compared to a mainstream film. The exchange of ‘Film 71’ was limited as the film is only accessible on DVD, blu-ray.
Ultra violet is DVD sharing with five others; this is a marketing technique which is used by the producers of the ‘Minions’ which makes the film more accessible to viewers.
Therefore there are many issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in film, most have been listed above. Big six

There are issues raised concerning media ownership in the production and exchange in the film industry despite the size of the production companies or studios as it is inevitable for a producer to do so during the making of a film, due to the varying factors such as the budget, technology used, film rating or critical acclaim.  Big production companies, distributors and big budgets do not prevent the raising of issues during production and exchange within the film making process.

Downtown Abbey - representation on class and status

In the clip from Downtown Abbey, director Brian Percival uses various techniques to construct the representation of class and status, such as editing, camera, mise en scene and sound.

In the editing, the contrast between the lives of the upper and lower class is shown through the fast transitions in the clip, for example in the kitchen when the servants and frantically rushing to prepare the food for the upper class. Another example is the long shots with slow pace of higher class throughout the extract. Notice that the pace tends to be slow when the upper class are in the shot and fast when the lower class are in the shots. this could suggest that the upper class have it easy, and that the lower class have a tough life. This makes us feel empathy for the lower class as they struggle through life being servants. The BBC could be trying to convey the message that the lower class are important too and we should all show them respect.

The lordship gets the majority of the screen time as he is seen as more important, conforming to the stereotypes. Therefore BBC are supporting this stereotype and sticking with the time period as it was like this is the olden days.

The upper class are dependent on the lower class this is shown due to the order of shots used by Percival. For example the shot of the servants preparing the food for the upper class is shown before we see the upper class sit down and eat it. This clearly highlights that the upper class cannot operate without the lower class. Which could convey the message that the lower class a needed to sustain the luxurious life style that the upper class have.

The chronological narrative highlights the status quo of the lives of the upper class, therefore conforming to the stereotypes. This is normal for the characters that everything is provided for them, such as they have the paper boy delivering to them but are unable to go to the shops themselves to get one. This shows that they are reliant on the lower class to receive what they want. This presents the upper class as snobby and lazy which therefore conforms to the stereotypes, it also portrays the lower class as hard working which again conforms to the stereotypes. As the drama is an age drama which is quite old, the stereotypes shown in the extract match the stereotypes of the past.

In the camera, Percival uses a high angle, wide shot of the paper boy on his bike to show that he is of a lower class from the ladyships point of view. This is incorporated into the establishing shot at the beginning of the extract, where we see the massive house and grounds then the small boy, this presents him as inferior and less significant than the other characters. even though he brings the shocking news that troubles the house. However the use of the rule of thirds shows the boy to be in the center of the shot. This could suggest that although the upper class see him as inferior, the BBC show him to be of some importance in the clip. The BBC want to present all classes as equal and doesn't believe there should be a divide between them.

The establishing shot of the stunning grounds in which the upper class seem to own makes the audience envy them. It also goes on as a tracking shot to show the gigantic expensive house in which they live in. This setting shows the upper class to be snobby so conforming to the stereotypes, we later see that there is a hierarchy of the people who live in the house, and that they are all of different statuses. This shows juxtaposition as we see in the shot the paper boy compared to the wealthy house

Both the butler and his Lordship were the same costume which could confuse the audience as they will be unsure as to who is of a higher status, but due to the continuous mentioning of his Lordship it soon becomes clear. A shot reverse shot shows both of them looking at each other from both of theirs point of view. This equals them as shot reverse shot puts them on the same level as they are both the same height. The BBC convey the message that they should be seen as the same level of importance.

The two shot mid shot upstairs of the Ladyship receiving food from the maid shows that they are of different classes, and the maid is serving her. This again, conforms to the stereotype of the upper class being of a higher status. However her Ladyship is laying on the bed which puts her on a lower level to the maid who is standing up, as this is from his Lordships point of you, this could be trying to convey the message that he sees them both of equal importance and status.

The lighting is predominately brighter on the upper class characters possibly suggesting that they are more knowledgeable, this could be why the lower class have to be so hard working. However we assume that people are born into classes but they can be of different statuses within the same class. The lighting is dark on the lower class this could imply that the BBC are trying to convey the message that the lower class are dirty and intellectual therefore shown in darker colours.

The costumes represent status as there are many people in the house shown throughout the extract, the upper class characters tend to be in suits and the lower class in maid outfits. For example when his Lordship hears the terrible news that the titanic has sunk we see a shot of what i presume to be the main family living in the mansion. The young girl in wearing a bright, beautiful, pink frock which displays the families wealth, the dad (his Lordship) is in a suit, and the mother is in a dark blue frock as her costume. This makes the audience feel jealously of the easy life the upper class seem to have.

The off-screen, incidental music begins when her Ladyship feels remorse for her friends when she finds out that they also sunk in the ship (titanic). But she shows no empathy for the other poor people who sunk on the ship which shows her to be snobby, which conforms to the stereotypes and makes her seem as a awful person. Although we, the audience feel sorry for her, we start to lose empathy as the music only begins when the upset has some relevance to her.

Calm music is shown whenever we see the upper class in a shot, this shows the peace of their lives through layering, this is the status quo for them. A good example of this is when his Lordship is walking up the stairs. His Lordship and her Ladyship are common phrases that are repeated in the extract, which shows that they are of the highest status in the house and in most peoples minds all the time.

There is frequent use of parallel (synchronous), off-screen sound which matches the mood of the clip, this is shown when his Lordship first receives the bad news. This makes the audience feel empathy for the characters in this part of the extract. The director, Percival uses this to portray that both classes have struggles and that the upper class life isn't always peaceful, therefore ruining the status quo.

In the section where we see one of the women maids who has a higher status than the other maids. We hear the diagetic, on-screen dialogue of the women saying to the lower maid 'wouldn't want his Lordships hands to be as black as yours'. This speech is clearly derogatory to the maid, as it implies that she is dirty, worthless and inferior to his Lordship, again showing the differences of classes. This makes the audience feel empathy for the lower class as they shouldn't be treated like this and should be seen as equals. Although this clip is from a different time period when equality wasn't seen as important.

Essay on Gender- Doctor Who

In this clip from doctor who gender is represented in various different ways, using mise en scene, camera, editing and sound.
In the editing, the use of screen time in this clips helps to further the representation of Gender. The screen time is mainly on men and the narrative because with dialogue from the male character possibly showing that men are of higher importance. This conforms to the stereotype of men being the dominant sex and historically more important. The order of narrative includes a flash back from the past when the female character is overruling the male character and shocking him by her intelligence. This flash back is significant to the scene and changes the dynamics of the characters. Therefore empowers the female character as if she is now more important and in control, this challenges (subverts) the stereotypes of women being weak and naive as she is presenting different behaviour. Possibly conveying messages to the audience that both genders should be treated as equals. There are fast transitions throughout the shot to show the urgency and stressful moments of the scene as many different things are happening at the same time. The shots switch from male and female characters so the audience can see both of their perspectives. Highlighting the fact that people should think of both genders as equal. There is large use of special effects towards the end of the clip where the doctor breaks free from the glass and becomes the doctor again. This presents the TV drama as an unrealistic representation of real life but shows the quality of technology used, this furthermore empowers men and shows strength from the doctor as he transforms. Also displays men and women working together as the girl also makes this happen and brings him back.

In the camera work, there is a tracking, three shot mid shot and establishing shot at the opening of the clip of the women arriving at the lab like place where many people have gathered. Involving a women in the middle of the frame with two guards at both sides of her, making her the main attention of the shot (standing out). However the guards costumes show them to have the authority therefore conforming to the stereotype of women being less authoritative. The shot reverse shot towards the end of the clip when the doctor is gliding towards the other male character, shows the two men's rivalry and hatred towards each other as the doctor cares for the girl, but the other male character wearing a suit as his costume wants to kill her. Conforming to the stereotype of men being stronger than women. The shot where the male character is in the middle of the frame focus our attention to him and is from the less authoritative characters perspective. As he is on a higher level to them in the shot and they are below him, there is also a shot where we, the audience witness are looking from the women's perspective of her on her knees looking up at the strong authoritative male conforming to the stereotypes.

In the mise en scene, the make up of the female character empowers her beauty and conforms to the stereotype that women focus on their appearance as her make up is obvious. She is the main focus towards the end of the clip when we see a close up of her face, this is when she is explaining to the other characters how the doctor is going to come back to life and how she is not going to be manipulated as her thought processes cannot be tampered with. The props used for example the stairs help to further represent gender. The stairs create to levels of which characters are on the female character challenging the male characters authority is on the lower level. Because of this the female characters are looked down upon presenting females as less authoritative and weak in comparison to men. The lighting is mostly naturalistic except from when the director uses special effects on the doctor as the lighting is bright in this section. This empowers males as dominant and smart therefore conforming to the stereotypes.

In the sound, the off-screen, synchronous music matches the dramatics of the scene, and empathises the tense feeling of the scene. The sound enhances the audiences the perception of what is happening in the scene as it doesn't overrule it or challenge it. There is also contrapuntal sound when various different people are saying doctor at the same time, this also contrasts with the music. This section shows men and women working together, empowering gender as a positive and ignoring the stereotypes. The dialogue between the male and female character is interesting as we hear the male character say 'iv'e got her exactly where i want her' in a aggressive, dominant way conforms to the stereotype of men being the dominant sex and overruling women. As they are seen to be naive and weak.
overall gender is mostly displayed as men conforming to their stereotypes of being the dominant sex and women also conforming to theirs with occasional challenges. Such as the female character displays high authority and intelligence.

Merlin essay: How is class and status represented in this clip?

In Merlin class and status is mostly represented as conforming to the stereotypes of the upper class being snobby and superior to others, then the lower class being hard working and looked down on. This can be shown using camera, editing, sound and mise en scene. Some characters such as the princess are seen as superior and of a higher status to the working class who are outside cutting wood and looking after animals due to the costumes worn.

At the beginning of the clip the sound is eerie as Merlin enters the castle, this is during the establishing wide shot of the castle outside and inside showing the expensive goods the upper class own. But in this shot Merlin is looking to steal some of their goods this shows the lower class in bad light. This also shows suspense and highlights the mischievous behavior of Merlin, also making it clear that he is not allowed in the castle therefore breaking the rules. The sound highlights the misbehavior of Merlin due to the dark minor key and slow pace of it.

Whilst Merlin is searching the castle room we the audience can hear the sound of the princess’s high heels walking which symbolizes superiority and is a prop used to show this. This also reflects the high status of the princess, although we don't feel intimidated by the princess and she is dressed (her costume) in a beautiful purple dress with dark long hair. he costume makes Merlin respectful and polite to her and she is of a higher status than him, she is also treating him fairly considering the behavior he is portraying.

The camera work is also used in this part of the clip as there is a over the shoulder shot of from the witch in the mirror point of view looking at the princess. we notice that Merlin has respect for her and speaks to her politely, this could be because he may find her attractive. As it is unlikely for him to treat the upper class with a lot of respect considering his behavior to the soldier. This presents class as a negative thing in society and it makes people believe they are better than others and makes people disrespect other people which is unnecessary as everyone is equal. It could be seen as bizarre that he is polite to her but not to the soldier but i think it it purely because she is showing respect to him.

The sound in the clip when Merlin is walking outside and everything is going on at the same time, the sound is chaotic and this is the same during the fight between Merlin and the soldier. The transitions of shots are quick during this section and so is the pace, this shows that the life in this town is chaotic and nobody is respectful of each other. This presents the working class as hard workers therefore conforming to the stereotype. This also makes us feel empathy for Merlin as he is not supported by anyone and nobody protects him from the royal soldier who's intentions were to wind him up and harm him.
Before the fight between Merlin and the soldier we can hear the diagetic sound of the other soldiers laughing and taking the micky out of Merlin for wanting to fight the soldier. This conforms to the stereotype of the higher class looking down on the lower class and shows negativity between classes. The lower class are seen as unable to fight and inferior, of a lower status, meaning that they should be treated with less respect. This makes us feel empathy for Merlin as everyone should be equal and treated the same.
Merlin always tends to be in the middle of the frame when he is shown, he is in a 2 shot mid shot when in an argument with the other magician. This presents Merlin as the most important character in the clip as he gets the most screen time highlighting that he is the character we should be focusing on and that we see most things from his perspective.
There is a tracking shot where Merlin is in the middle of the frame walking away from the soldier showing him little respect although he is trying to wind Merlin up. This presents the upper class as snobby, disrespectful to the lower class and rude, again conforming to their stereotypes and making us feel empathy for the lower class. In this example Merlin.
Editing is also used to present class, the editing is fast pace during the fight between Merlin and the soldier and there are fast transition showing that this is a chaotic part of the clip. The pace is also slow when the princess is walking outside the castle and catches Merlin inside. This presents the lower class as being mischievous this conforms to their stereotypes of being immature. This could suggest that the upper class are of such a status that it doesn't effect them to be in a fight because they have nothing to be worried about, no job, nor do they have to do anything themselves. For the working and lower class their situation is completely different and the decisions they make involve consequences.
The lighting is bright on the soldier showing his arrogance and positive behavior of his life as he is superior and of a higher status compared to everyone else, as he is wealthy. This conforms to the stereotypes of rich, upper class people being snobby.

Task 7: Audience and cinema going statistics

From the survey I conducted I found that the most popular days to go to the cinema is Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to it being the weekend therefore most people have more free time. The most popular genre of film is comedy and the second is action films. The top grossing comedy film 2015 is Inside Out closely followed by Minions. The top grossing action film of 2015 is Star Wars (The Force Awakens) closely followed by Jurassic World. According to the survey most people hear about films through trailers and social media. Most of them prefer US films as more of the blockbuster films are made in the US. Most people prefer 2D films as they are cheaper and more comfortable to watch. In the survey there were very few people who had seen more than 5 3D films. If they do not watch films in the cinema they watch them illegally or pay for them on box office or Netflix. Most audiences visit the cinema with friends as they share the same interest in films as they do. Most audiences visit the cinema in town so Odeon and they go on the weekend.

Task 10: distribution

Distribution is in charge of the promotion of a film and has a very important role, as the distribution of the film brings the income and could bring a large income from a rubbish film. Marketing techniques are key as the producers of Devils due knew that the film wouldn't do very well, so they created a viral campaign that drew attention the film and got people talking about it. Some people went because they found the viral campaign amusing and thought they might as well give the film a go.
Distribution is a highly competitive business as you want your film to be the most popular film in the cinema so it is seen first and chosen over other films. Every film has its own distribution plan to ensure it reaches the right audiences.
The distribution company has to take into account the cost of putting the film in the cinema and the marketing techniques. Also the advertising( TV, radio, outdoor, online, promotion), publicity, festival screening and the campaign production( trailers, posters). As all of these cost the distribution company money so they need to make it worth it.
Some distribution companies as get people to watch and review their film before they release it (research screening).
Dates:
February to March- Dead time for block buster, but a good time to release a small film.
Easter to the end of August- This is a popular time to release blockbuster films as it is holiday season therefore people have more free time.
September-  This is a dead time for film releases as people don't have a lot of money due to the holidays, but it is time for girly low key films.
October to January- the film when the films who receive the awards are released.
November to December- this is a crucial time for block buster films.

Opening weekend- this is when the film is first release it has a week which will determine whether the film stays in the cinema or not.
The distribution company has to have a strategic business plan.
Films come out of DVD 16 and a half weeks after it is released in the cinema.
